Nekene had found herself on a trip to visit a friend in a nearby town. It was decided that she would stay the night with her friend. However, for some reason something pulled on her to return home. She found she had a growing sense of dread. Sighing she bid her friend goodbye apologizing for having to leave early. It was true she hated to lie, but it seemed the only way to return home. She told her friend she was sick. As she entered the town, she knew it would be best if she was dropped at the entrance of the town. Her friend left her rather puzzled by her strange behavior.
She promised her friend she would call her as soon as she arrived safely home. Nekene made her way towards the gas station at the entrance of town. It was quiet which was not that strange for this time of night. The town did not tend to get a lot of through traffic as it were. However, the strange thing was the car sitting next to the pump with its door open. Nekene looked around puzzled. Ok, so someone might have run in and forgot to shut it things like that did happen. She moved towards the door shutting it figuring it really would not hurt. The pumps nuzzle lay next to the ground by the car. Nekene frowned walking towards the other side of the car seeing no one on the street she walked towards the station calling, "Mr. Anderson did someone leave their car?" However, she would receive no answer from Mr. Anderson because he was hanging from the door of the store. Hangings there as he swung back and forth like some strange marionette. She let out a yelp half of surprise and half of horror as she spun around and fell into the station.
Hitting her knees she frowned as she looked up to see a man with his head smashed into the gas counter where the cigarettes used to be keep. The blood was still sticky around his him where his head had met the glass. Nekene slide back on her bun away from the blood on the floor as if it would somehow make her sick. Turning a young mother was leaning against the wall with a pen sticking out of her eye and a slash across her neck which made her head hang at a rather awkward angle. Nekene pulled back the scream which threaten to overcome her. If she started to scream now she might never stop. Everywhere around her, there seemed to be dead people, she needed to get help. She stood up as carefully as she could being careful not to fall as she dunked beneath Mr. Anderson's body back out to the street.
She turned rushing to the first house that she saw. However, it was the same everywhere. Every store, every house, every car, and every place she went nothing but death. So, many dead she wanted to scream. However, screaming was what you did when you did not know what else to do and she knew she had to keep moving. She had to get home. It was only the hope that somehow her own family had been
spared that pushed her on. She clung to that hope like the last remnants of sanity. Arriving at her house she found herself pausing at the door. What if they were dead also? Her thoughts were racing. What could have done this? How could so many people have died at once? It seemed impossible. Some were still within their wn homes behind locked doors. The answer should have been obvious. However, Nekene would have never believed it if she had not seen it with her own eyes.
She opened the door to her house and her father stood their knife raised above his head. He seemed to move as if controlled by some invisible force as he struck repeatedly. He continued to hack and hack away stabbing at her mother. Her mother who did not move did not try to fight back. It was the strong scene in the world. A few teardrops falling down her father face as he turned towards his youngest child and
ran the knife through his own chest. Nekene cried out as she ran towards him as he fell trying desperately to catch him. Nothing seemed to make any sense in her head. She turned to see her brother standing there. A look of surprised crossed his features as he shook his head. It all made sense all of the sudden.
He controlled them all to kill each other. How else could one person cause such chaos? She glanced up at him expecting to die. He would have to kill her himself though. The young girl looked up her blue eyes studying him as she watched him move towards her. He picked up the bloody knife and flung it at her feet as he moved out the door into the night. Nekene sat frozen for a few minutes unsure of what to do. They say screaming is what one does when you do not know what else to do. Therefore, she did the only thing left.
She screamed.
